The Rec Sports mantra is Play Hard. Get Fit. Live Well. Night after night, students pile into the gyms and onto the courts to catch a break between classes and homework. Whether the sport is basketball, indoor soccer (futsal), badminton, or volleyball, the students show up to play hard.
Basketball courts often have more people waiting to play than people actually playing. Futsal is becoming increasingly more popular on campus, and Rec Sports has already converted a basketball/volleyball court to accommodate the swift-footed enthusiasts. And yet, capacity continues to be challenged during peak hours.
The master plan increases the number of gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and the number of multipurpose spaces to accommodate futsal, floor hockey, martial arts, and other specialized activities. The increased square footage (more than double what is currently available) also increases Rec Sports’s ability to grant reservation requests from student organizations and community groups.
Rec Sports aims to meet the increasing campus demand for court and multipurpose space with the new facility design. More importantly, the division aims to make sure students keep showing up to play hard, night after night, for the next 50 years.
